Waheed inspires PCAA to next round in Challenge Cup

LAHORE: The 2020 National Football Challenge Cup concluded its 6th Day fixtures, all at Fame FC Ground in Model Town with some interesting results.

In Group D, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) continued their fine form with a Muhammad Waheed (26′ and 70′) brace overcoming minnows Lyallpur FC 2-0 to confirm their place in the Round of 16.

With Waheed constantly troubling Lyallpur’s defence and his PCAA teammate Muhammad Naeem Hussain pulling the strings in attack, PCAA eased to a consecutive win topping Group D with 6 points from 2 games. Waheed is currently top-scorer in the Cup with an astounding 5 goals from 2 games.

In the other Group D game played under lights, Afghan FC Chaman overcame their previous 4-0 drubbing at hands of PCAA to thrash Baloch FC Quetta 3-0 instead.

Amanullah gave Afghan FC a first half lead after he headed in a freekick. With Baloch FC Quetta trying to get back in the game in 2nd half, Afghan FC exploited the opposition’s leaky defence as goals from Najeebullah (70′) and Majeed (80′) confirmed their team’s first win of the Cup campaign.

The result boosts Afghan FC Chaman’s chances of reaching next round as they now have superior goal difference of -1 to Baloch FC Quetta’s -2 and will face Lyallpur in their final group game while PCAA are favourites to beat Baloch FC Quetta in their final group game.

In Group E, SA Farms from Faisalabad surprisingly held WAPDA to a 1-1 draw and maintain their top spot with 4 points from 2 games while WAPDA again got stuck with a draw in consecutive games. Former Pakistan midfielder Muhammad Ahmed gave WAPDA the lead after 10 minutes, before Amir Aslam equalised another 10 minutes later for SA Farms.

The other Group E game saw former K-Electric star Muhammad Riaz inspire Asia Ghee Mills from Bahawalpur to a shock 1-0 win over Pakistan Navy to make the group blow wide open.

Hangu-native Riaz scored with 10 minutes left on the clock to make Asia Ghee Mills register their first points of the campaign and rise to 2nd with 3 points from 2 games. Navy are now bottom with 1 point from 2 games and face slim chances of reaching next round.
