KPT end 13th in PPFL

KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) ended at the 13th spot when they held former champions Army to a goalless draw in their last game of the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League held here at the KPT Stadium on Monday.

With the output KPT finished their 30-match voyage at 32 points. WAPDA and Habib Bank, who ended at the 11th and 12th spots, respectively, also ended with 32 points but had better goal averages than KPT.

WAPDA finished at -8 goal average, followed by HBL with -10 and KPT with -11. Although the game had importance for the truncated KPT, for Army, who had already ended fourth, it was a dead rubber, so their players did not look their best.

“The players were not in a fighting mood as we already had ended at the fourth place,” Army skipper Jaffar Khan told ‘The News’. Army are expected to fly back to their headquarters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday (tomorrow).

KPT coach Mohammad Asif said his team did not have the assistance of those players who had been terminated. “You know we were already short of players as we did not field those who are in trouble,” said Asif.

Army concluded their journey with 58 points. Meanwhile, National Bank, who had already ended sixth, were given a walkover when Chaman’s Afghan FC did not turn up for their last match they were supposed to play here at the Aga Khan Ground.

National Bank ended with 44 points while Afghan FC wrapped up their campaign at the ninth place with 35 points. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), who have already finished at the eighth spot, will face champions Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) in their last match on Tuesday (today) at the KPT Stadium, which will end the marathon league.

Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) secretary Col Ahmed Yar Lodhi is expected to attend the closing ceremony after the final match which will start at 2:00pm.
