PAF edge NBP, KRL rout Wohaib, Baloch FC get walkover

KARACHI: Striker Mohammad Sher hit a double to guide Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to a 2-1 victory over star-studded National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), while holders Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) began their crucial phase with a thumping 4-0 triumph over struggling Wohaib Club in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Wednesday.

Here at the KPT Stadium, Mohammad Sher proved to be the sole tormentor for National Bank with two vital strikes as PAF tamed National Bank to stretch their tally to 49 on the second spot.

It turned out to be a tough contest as both sides made concerted efforts to get an upper hand.

Pakistan Air Force (PAF), who were without their key strikers Irfan Ali and Mujahid, showed that they still were the top team as they displayed great firepower, putting constant pressure on their rivals.

Following incisive rallies Mohammad Sher put PAF ahead in the 14th minute and the lead lasted till breather.

After the interval, National Bank showed their firework, inflicting rallies from both wings, and were able to bring parity through defender Misbah-ul-Hasan who fired in the 66th minute.

But this failed to unsettle the airmen as they opted for more aggressive display and took the decisive lead eight minutes from time as Sher Mohammad scored his second goal.

“The boys worked hard and I appreciate their efforts,” PAF coach Mohammad Arshad told ‘The News’. “We were missing our two players but still the remaining lot played according to the plan which paid dividends,” said the former international.

The loss left National Bank at 31 points from 23 meetings.

Meanwhile, at the Fame Football Ground in Lahore, Kaleemullah scored a brace as KRL recorded their 15th victory from 19 games they have played so far after routing Wohaib Club at the latter’s backyard.

KRL, who have won the previous two editions, went ahead through Zia-Us-Salam in the 14th minute and at half time were leading 1-0.

After the interval, they played even with more aggression, scoring three goals inside 19 minutes to seal a comfortable win that helped them share 49 points with PAF at the second place.

Star striker Kaleemullah, who did not impress during Pakistan’s recent tours of Singapore and Sri Lanka, scored a brace in 65th and 83rd minutes. Hasnain Abbas, who had missed a penalty in the final of the four-nation tournament in Sri Lanka recently, landed one in the 68th minute. The loss left Wohaib Club reeling at eight points from 24 matches.

Baloch FC inflated their tally to 22 from 22 meetings when they were awarded a walkover after WAPDA failed to turn up for the match scheduled at the Nushki Stadium in Balochistan.

WAPDA, who forfeited all their three games in Balochistan due to security fears, have 26 points from 23 matches.

Today (Thursday) will be a rest day.

Meanwhile, in the ‘Group of Five’ round of the 9th PFF League 2012 (B Division) Department phase, Pakistan Steel defeated Higher Education Commission (HEC) 1-0 in Lahore with Mohammad Akram scoring the winner in the fifth minute at Fame FC Ground in Model Town, Lahore.

At Railway Stadium in Lahore, hosts Railways were defeated by PACA Chaman 1-0 with Sirajuddin netting a goal in the 51st minute.
