Rasool double gives KESC easy win

KARACHI: Mohammad Rasool’s double guided Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to a 2-0 win over Afghan FC in their match of the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League at the Government High School Ground in Chaman on Wednesday.

Rasool once again proved to be a major contributor for KESC, scoring goals in the 29th and 45th minutes. The visitors were leading 2-0 at the interval.

Chitral-born Rasool inflated their tally in the season to 16 goals, three goals shy of KRL striker Kaleemullah who has 19 to his credit.

After the breather, a tough fight was witnessed, but neither side managed any goal.

KESC with the win jumped to the third spot with 39 points from 18 matches, while the loss left Afghan FC struggling at 16 points from 17 meetings.

“It was a good game. Our team played really well in front of the huge crowd which enjoyed the match. The pressure was there and we could even win by three goals but the line-man made a mistake by not giving us a goal from Abdul Rehman in the end,” KESC skipper Mohammad Essa told ‘The News’ from Chaman.

“I think due to this thick crowd, the referee made an error as in the video it appeared to be a clear goal,” said Essa. “It’s a great centre and you will not see such a large crowd at any other venue and today the fans watched the show with great patience,” Essa said.

“Our next game against Muslim FC is very important for us and if we won it, we would come in a very good position as we will be playing 11 matches in Karachi and there we will be getting a home advantage,” said Essa, who did not field due to a knee injury.

At the Korangi Baloch Football Ground here, Navy held Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to a 1-1 draw to stretch their points to 17 from 16 matches.

It was not a very fast game and both sides looked in poor shape and very few good moves were seen. International striker Shakir Lashari put PIA ahead in the 29th minute, but Navy brought an equaliser through Mohammad Adnan in the 52nd minute.

In the last 15 minutes, Navy twice came close to taking a lead but on both occasions the strikers failed to find the target.

The single point helped Navy move to 20 points from 18 appearances.

The match between PMC Athletico and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) also ended in a 1-1 draw at the PAF Complex Ground in Peshawar.

Mohammad Mujahid, who got married the other day, provided lead to hosts PAF in the fifth minute after capitalising on a fine pass. However, Faisalabad-based PMC levelled the score through Fazal Hussain in the 32nd minute.

PAF, trailing at the fourth place, advanced to 38 points from 19 meetings, while PMC Athletico took their tally to 14 from 19 matches.

The two-time defending champions KRL are still at the top with 43 points, followed by former champions Army, who have 40.

Today’s fixtures: ZTBL v WAPDA (Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad), Muslim FC v KPT (Government High School, Chaman), Army v Wohaib FC (Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad).
