PIA hold KRL, KPT thrash Wohaib

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) produced a good performance when they held two-time defending champions Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) to a 1-1 draw, while Karachi Port Trust (KPT) defeated Lahore’s Wohaib Club 2-0 in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Friday.

At the Railways Stadium in Lahore, KRL, who have recently returned after a poor performance at the AFC President’s Cup final round in Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe, failed to beat PIA, who have been passing through a bad patch due to injuries to most of their key players.

Following a flurry of incisive rallies, Saadullah put KRL on the front foot with a fine field effort in the 23rd minute. However, PIA, playing under coach Shamim Khan, brought the equaliser through Ishtiaq moments before the close of first half.

The single point helped KRL move to 15 points from seven games, while PIA inflated their tally to 13 from nine meetings.

In the other match at the UMT Ground in Lahore, KPT produced their fourth win of the season, beating hosts Wohaib Club, owned by former secretary of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Hafiz Salman Butt.

Key striker Mohammad bin Younis put KPT ahead on penalty in the middle of the first half and Mohammad Naved doubled their lead in the second half.

The triumph stretched KPT’s tally to 14 points from 10 meetings, while Wohaib Club are struggling at two points from seven appearances.

KPT Sports Manager Shah Naeem said that his team played really well.

“Today we played extremely well. All the boys made their hundred percent effort in spite of the fact that the ground’s width was unsatisfactory — a bit small — which created problems for us,” Shah said.

At the PAF Complex Ground in Peshawar, Chaman’s Muslim FC came from behind to hold Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to a 2-2 draw to take their points to 15 from 11 matches.

Mohammad Mujahid placed PAF in comfortable position with his doubles that came in 48th and 66th minutes. However, Muslim FC bounced back strongly by hitting goals through Mohammad Tahir in the 67th minute and Haji Mohammad in the 76th to bring the parity.

Muslim FC coach Mohammad Dawood was elated with the outcome. “We were 0-2 down but the way we came back was splendid. I give full marks to my striker Saeed Ahmad who played brilliantly,” Dawood said.

The single point advanced PAF to 12 points from nine games.

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) recorded their maiden win, beating Nushki’s Baloch FC 1-0 at the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad. Hikmatullah scored the lone goal of the match moments before the final whistle.
