KRL end NBP undefeated streak, Wohaib hold KESC

KARACHI: National Bank lost their first game of the season when they went down 0-1 to two-time defending champions Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Tuesday.

At the Railways Stadium in Lahore, National Bank finally experienced a defeat when they were downed by a strong KRL who before this game had drawn two matches following their return from Tajikistan where they failed to impress in the AFC President’s Cup final round the other week.

International striker Mohammad Qasim scored the winner for the hosts in the 30th minute.

In spite of the defeat National Bank coach Nasir Ismail was satisfied with the performance of his side.

“No doubt the boys played really well. The whole team played like a unit and followed the plan but they did make a mistake in the defence which was capitalised on by the rivals who are a strong outfit,” Nasir told ‘The News’.

“It was a match of high intensity but you know we are fighting against injuries and if you miss your five to six key players then playing a close game with a better side looks graceful,” added Nasir.

The win helped KRL occupy the third place with 19 points from nine matches, while National Bank are at the second place with 22 points from 13 meetings.

Meanwhile, at the Fame FC Ground in Model Town, Lahore, Wohaib Club claimed a crucial point when they earned a 1-1 draw against the so far impressive side KESC.

KESC, who were missing their injured skipper Mohammad Essa in the first half, experienced an early blow when Wohaib Club scored a goal. However, KESC were able to bring an equaliser through Riaz Ahmad in the second half.

KESC skipper Mohammad Essa was disappointed by the result. “The result has upset me immensely,” Essa told this correspondent. “The rivals were not a good side and we should have won by a heavy margin. But we missed so many easy chances which is frustrating,” said Essa, a former Pakistan captain.

This was the third consecutive draw in Punjab for KESC who had performed brilliantly in their Karachi round.

The single point inflated KESC’s tally to 24 from 12 appearances, while Wohaib Club took their points to four from nine games.

At the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, Chaman’s Afghan FC recorded their second victory, beating Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) 1-0 to take their points to seven from nine meetings. ZTBL have seven points from 10 meetings.

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) engineered their fifth victory after edging Navy 1-0 at the PAF Complex in Peshawar with Mohammad Mudassir Waseem netting the lone goal in the 81st minute. PAF joined Army and Muslim FC on the fourth spot as the trio have 18 points each, while Navy are struggling at 13 points from 12 matches.

Today’s fixtures: Army v Muslim FC (Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad), WAPDA v PIA (Railways Stadium, Lahore), PMC v KPT (PMC Ground, Faisalabad).
