KARACHI: The 9th Pakistan Premier Football League, featuring 16 teams, will start in the first week of September, Pakistan Football Federation’s (PFF) Director Development and Competitions Pervez Saeed Mir told ‘The News’ on Monday.

An insider said that the PPFL would start from September 1.

A managers’ meeting to discuss the event’s modalities has been convened on Tuesday (today) at the PFF headquarters at Lahore at 11:30pm, which will be chaired by the federation’s secretary Col (retd) Ahmad Yar Lodhi.

Sources said that PFF wanted every team to have four junior players in the playing-XI in the league, but the departments were likely to oppose the proposal.

If the PFF’s plan is implemented, each team will have to keep at least eight junior players (from 18 to 20 years of age) which will create confusion.

Various teams’ sources said that by doing so, after every two years the juniors would enter into the pool of seniors and the departments and clubs would have to hire more juniors for the purpose.

Another source said that it would be better if all departments were first persuaded to form their junior teams. It would help the country form better junior teams for the continental events.

The winners of PPFL will move into the AFC President’s Cup, the third-tier continental club competitions. KRL, the reigning champions, have successfully got through the first round of the AFC President’s Cup and will feature in the six-team finals in September at a venue yet to be decided.
