Colts resume homework for AFC U16 qualifiers

KARACHI: Pakistan colts on Sunday resumed their preparation for the AFC Under-16 Championship qualifiers to be held in Kuwait from September 12 to 22.

“We held two training sessions both in the morning and evening today,” coach Sajjad Mehmood told ‘The News’ on Sunday from Punjab Stadium where the camp is in progress.

“I had instructed all the players before their departure for their homes to celebrate Eid that they should keep themselves fit while staying at home and now I’m going to find out how fit they are,” he said.

The same 22-man squad has been retained for the Kuwait event which won the SAFF Under-16 Championship in Kathmandu early last month after beating India 2-1 in the final.

Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Yemen, Afghanistan and Maldives are the other teams in Group B. Pakistan will start their campaign with a match against Maldives on September 12, followed by their games against hosts Kuwait on September 14, Afghanistan on September 19 and Yemen on September 22.

Two teams from the group will advance into the tournament proper which will be held next year. Pakistan team will depart for Kuwait on September 10.
