Karachi Football Round-up

Former KASB Karachi Football League champions Young Ansari FC beat fellow Zone West side Frontier City 1-0 in final of All-Karachi Babar Memorial Football Tournament to be crowned as champions. The decisive goal was scored by midfielder Ali Murad, with Frontier City going down to 10 men after star player Yousaf Khan was sent off for a red card in 45th minute. The tournament was hosted by Lasbela Students, with chief guest for final being Ahmed Sheikh from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) who met both teams and distributed prizes at the end of the game ceremony.

After an action packed yet goal-less first half, the final got more interesting in 2nd half when Frontier City star defender Yousaf Khan was sent off for a 2nd yellow card by referee Muhammad Rizwan. Young Ansari took advantage of the extra man when midfielder Ali Murad scored in 52nd minute with a powerful free kick from 20 yards out going past Frontier City goalie Muhammad Ismail. Assistant referees were Abdul Malik and Imam Bakhsh.

On 20 May, the same venue witnessed the final of All-Karachi Ferogh Tournament which saw Young Ansari lose to hosts Wasif Memorial 5-4 on penalties after 1-1 score at end of game with goals from Arshad and Rasheed Pira. That final was attended by Mushtaq Ahmed, ADO of CDGK.

Tournament hosts Colony Star (North Karachi) were knocked out of the 6th All-Karachi Saqib Kazmi Memorial Floodlit Football Tournament 2011 after losing 0-1 to Sher Islam FC (Rasheedabad) in the semi-finals. Muhammad Yousaf Kaka scored the decisive goal in 45th minute for Sher Islam after he beat three defenders and bamboozled Colony Star goalkeeper Muhammad Asif to score.

Referee was Babar Khan with Abdul Wahab and Mumtaz Ahmed, with match commissioner Abdul Karim (ex-member Central Zone). Musa XI (Usmanabad) face Manghopir XI in 2nd semi-final on 25 May at 9 PM, with final on 27 May at 5 PM.

Zonal FA Karachi West held a general meeting headed by former international captain and current Zone West chairman Zafar Iqbal where they passed a unanimous resolution condemning the murder of KPT star Ismail Baba and deplored the deteriorating law and order situation and gang violence in Lyari Town that made Ismail Baba one of its many victims.

Zone West also demanded the police of bringing the murderers of Ismail Baba to justice and tackle the criminal elements causing havoc in Lyari Town. The meeting was also attended by Zone West vice chairman Dr Abdul Hameed, Ameer Sardar, secretary Rahim Bakhsh, as well as chairman Referees Zone West Chaudhary Israr.

The meeting gave glowing tributes to Ismail Baba’s football career and offered their condolences to his grieving family. The former Kalri Star, PTCL, PPWD, and LLWC star was also coaching young kids in Lyari Town’s Maulvi Usman Park as well as being given a coaching role in the recently inaugurated State Life football team.
