AKU Championship: NED again in top form

Organised by the Aga Khan University (AKU) Sports & Rehabilitation Centre at the AKU Football Ground, the 9th AKU Inter-University Football Tournament 2011 saw the results 3 games in Day 6 of its competition on Saturday, 9 April 2011.

NED University showed top form once again when they hammered Jinnah Medical & Dental College 11-0 in their Group ‘A’ clash. Hat tricks by Khurram Shakeel (4′, 12′, 67′) and Jamshed Omer (5′, 18′, 59′) saw NED completely humiliate their opponents in style. Further goals by Rafay Fahim (8′), Areeb Ali (52′ and 54′), Naeemullah Khan (73′) and an own goal by JMDC’s Zulfiqar Ali Mirza (61′) made NED win a resounding 11-0 at the end as they staked their claims for winning the AKU Championship for the 2nd year running.

In Group ‘D’, PNEC-NUST beat Baqai Medical College (BMU) 7-2 in their clash. Goals from M. Abbas (9′ and 55′), M. Mehdi (49′ and 58′), Umair Ahmed (6′), M. Haroon (65′), and Shazli Tahir (68′) helped PNEC-NUST dominate their opponents. Only Rafiullah (12′) and Attaullah (70′) could manage goals for BMU.

In Group ‘C’, the IBA United team recorded a narrow 1-0 win over Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST). IBA United had to thank Zahid Iqbal for his 50th minute goal that was enough to beat SZABIST in the end.

In Group ‘B’, hosts Aga Khan University (AKU) were back to winning ways as they beat Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) 6-2 with Karachi United star Rehan Munir in fine form as he scored 5 times (3′, 26′, 46′, 58′, 68′) past DUHS. Omar Akhtar also joined the fun with his 13th minute goal for AKU. DUHS had actually taken a first minute lead through Bazil Alyazji but AKU came back strongly to be 3-1 up at half time. Abdul Jalil scored DUHS’s second goal in 48th minute but DUHS had been completely overwhelmed by then.

The matches were supervised by Referees Naseer Umar, Khalid Mumtaz, M. Yousuf, Saeed Khan, with Official Scorer Sajjad Akbar and Match Commissioners Munawar Khan and Qamar Ali.

On Monday, 3 games will be played. IoBM face SSUET at 2 PM, PNEC-NUST face LNMC at 3 PM, and PAF-KIET face MAJU at 5 PM.
