Southshore and Karachi Grammar reach KUSC 2010-11 Final!

The Baloch Mujahid Stadium in Ibrahim Hyderi, Karachi witnessed the semi-finals of the 6th Karachi United Schools Championship 2010-11 yesterday (22.01.2011). Both semis proved to be intense affairs as Southshore School stunned defending champions Lyceum School 3-1 in penalty shoot-out after 1-1 draw at end of normal time. In other semi, former champions Karachi Grammar School squeezed past St. Patrick’s High School 2-1 to face Southshore in the final. KGS striker Shazer Razi and Southshore goalkeeper Abbas Khalzai were given man of the match awards by KUSC chief organiser Riaz Ahmed for their superb performance in their respective semi-finals.

Lyceum School took the lead over Southshore School when referee Imam Bakhsh awarded a penalty against Southshore, which was duly converted by Taha Rehman for Lyceum School. This made Taha Rehman become top-scorer of KUSC 2010-11 with 9 goals to his name. However, Southshore equalised in 45th minute through another penalty scored by captain Danial Naqi. The match finished 1-1 at end of normal time, leading to a nail-biting penalty shootout. Southshore’s Danial Naqi, Bilal Naqi, and Muqeet Khan converted their chances while goalkeeper Abbas Khalzai performed exceptionally well as only one Lyceum player Danial Mirza could score past him in shootout. Hence, Southshore School knocked out the defending champions Lyceum School to reach the finals of the KUSC 2010-11.

In order semis, former champions Karachi Grammar School fought hard to beat a resilient St. Patrick’s High School side 2-1 to reach the finals. KGS took the lead when striker Shazer Razi scored from penalty spot in 27th minute but St. Pats player Umar Younus equalised in 33rd minute when his freekick beat KGS goalie Saad Ahmed all ends up. However, KGS again took the lead through a breath taking Shazer Razi strike in 43rd minute that would be considered a strong candidate for goal of the tournament. KGS maintained the narrow 2-1 till the end to join Southshore School in the final. The two goals by Shazer Razi in game also helped him join Lyceum School’s Taha Rehman as joint top-scorers of tournament with 9 goals each.

Referees were Imam Bakhsh, Babar Khan, Umar Baloch, Farrukh Riaz, and Riaz Baloch, while match commissioner was Abdul Karim (Member Central Zone).
