Lahore, 28 July: Former National Champion Punjab failed to stop Karachi’s Diya FC in Group-A clash of sixth National Women Football Championship today at Jinnah Stadium and lost 0-2. Later on, Group-D tie clash between Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa (KP) saw KP winning by 1-0 in Ground No.2. The League matches will be concluded on 31 July, followed by Quarter-finals on 1, 2 August. The semi-finals are being scheduled for 4 August while third-place match and final will be played on 5 August.
Diya had to play the match without Misha Dawaood who died during Wednesday's Air Crash. She was to face Punjab in the Championship on Wednesday evening but her life had not allowed her to face former Champions. The scorers for Diya were Hajra Khan (8th minute) and Marium Laghari (35th min). The win pushed Diya into quarter-final alongwith Islamabad from Group-A. The KP-AJK match provided great entertainment for the once again well-sized crowd, as the ball moved up and down the field fast and there were many great moves on both sides. Both teams had opportunities, but kept ending up denied by the other side. But just as it looked like it was going to be the goalless draw, striker Mehreen struck the all important goal for KP. Thursday (29 July) Fixture : Balochistan v WAPDA (5.30 PM, Jinnah Stadium), Frontier College v HEC (5.30 PM, Ground No.2) |
