KARACHI: The All-Pakistan Football Challenge Cup kicked off yesterday with PTV winning the opening match 3-1 against Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Green at the Qayyum Stadium in Peshawar.

The tournament is featuring top departments of the country, including Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) champions K-Electric, KRL, Wapda, PIA and PAF among a total of 12 teams. The final of the event will take place on October 19.

On the opening day, PTV’s Sallahuddin scored twice for his team and Jamil Khan sealed the win, while Zahoor Khan scored one goal for K-P Green.

According to tournament organiser and the K-P Football Association Secretary Basit Kamal, the tournament is taking place in Peshawar after 20 years.

“On the first day of the match, we had a crowd of around 200 people but we’re expecting more to come out in the following days,” Kamal told The Express Tribune. “The tournament will benefit football in K-P; we’ll get to motivate the football community here and hopefully groom better players for the future.”

The tournament is taking place with the approval of the Lahore High Court appointed administrator Asad Munir, who is looking after the affairs of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) after two rival groups of officials began fighting over positions in the office.

The infighting has caused a standstill in the country’s football activities, and Pakistan have been unable to hold the PPFL for the last two seasons.
