PFF Cup group stage concludes; WAPDA smash Navy with Jadeed hattrick

Lahore: The PFF Cup 2016 concluded its group stage today (14 February 2016) in Lahore as Group B and Group C final games were decided to complete quarter-finals line-up.

Day started with Group C as Khan Research Laboratories faced National Bank of Pakistan to decide top 2 slots at Raiders FC Ground in Faisal Town. KRL opened the account after 10 minutes through Murtaza Hussain before Yasir Afridi made it 2-0 in 21st minute. NBP tried hard to reduce the deficit but Sher Ali Khan’s 81st minute goal proved too late as KRL won 2-1 and topped group with 3 straight wins with NBP in 2nd.

At Fame FC Ground in Model Town, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) edged Ashraf Sugar Mills of Bahawalpur 1-0 to win their dead rubber clash. After a goalless first half, SNGPL finally took the lead with an Umar Farooq freekick from 25 yards out in 52nd minute that beat ASM goalkeeper Rafiullah and win the match. SNGPL now go home with 3 points while Ashraf Sugar Mills lost all their games with 0 points to show.

Group B games were very eventful. At Fame Ground, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) overcame a challenging Pakistan Police side 2-1 to win the group. SSGC’s Abdul Salam gave them the lead after 7 minutes only for Police to equalise through Umair in 14th minute. After tense end-to-end football by both sides, SSGC’s international star Saadullah made it 2-1 in 73rd minute that eventually decided the tie. SSGC finished top with 7 points while Police got just 3 points.

At Raiders Ground, WAPDA were desperate for a win to reach next round as they smashed Pakistan Navy 5-1. WAPDA’s Chaman-born striker Jadeed Khan Pathan proved decisive with a stunning hattrick (12th, 74th, and 86th minutes) and Wasim Abbas also scored twice (57th and 64th minutes). Navy could only respond through Mohsin Ali’s 72nd minute consolation goal as WAPDA confirmed 2nd place with 6 points. Navy finished bottom with just 1 point.

The quarterfinals shall begin from tomorrow (15 February). Pakistan Army face Faisalabad’s Bhatti United at Raiders Ground at 2 PM. The full quartefinals line-up is:

15 Feb: Army vs Bhatti United
16 Feb: PAF vs Karachi United
17 Feb: SSGC vs NBP
18 Feb: KRL vs WAPDA
