LAHORE: The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) grabbed an important victory in the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) on Monday when they defeated Lyallpur FC 2-0 to go three points clear at the top.

KESC’s victory helped them move to 62 points from 28 games and put the onus back on second-placed two-time defending champions Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) to win against the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) on Wednesday to return to top spot in what promises to be an interesting race to the title.

The match against the NBP will be KRL’s 27th while third-placed Wapda, who have played 28 games, have 59 points.

The top three have a nine-point advantage over fourth-placed Pakistan Air Force (PAF) who scored twice in the dying minutes to beat Muslim FC 3-1 in Monday’s other game.

At the Faisal Town Football Ground, the KESC were too good for already-relegated Lyallpur as Mohammad Rasool scored just past the hour mark and Mohammad Yaqoob scored the second to seal all three points in the 43rd.

At the Model Town Football Ground, PAF had goals by Mansoor Khan, his second of the game, in the 88th and Pakistan international striker Mohammad Mujahid deep into injury time to grab victory against Muslim FC.

Muslim FC, playing their final game of the campaign, seemed to have taken a point when Mohammad Tahir’s 80th minute strike cancelled out Mansoor’s opener in the 56th but ended the season with 44 points — a disappointing return for a side which finished third last season.
