KARACHI: Abdul Samad Khan’s lone strike on penalty guided Afghan FC to a 1-0 triumph over Karachi Port Trust (KPT), while Pakistan Air Force (PAF) came from two goals down to hold WAPDA to a 2-2 draw in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Saturday.
At the Government High School Ground in Chaman, Samad scored from the spot in the 98th minute to take his club to 19 points from 18 meetings.
KPT coach Mohammad Asif was not happy with the decision of the referee. “I think it was not a penalty as there was no such incident or foul which could prompt the referee to give the decision against us,” Asif told ‘The News’.
The loss left KPT at 17 points from 19 appearances.
Sources told ‘The News’ that former FIFA referee Mohammad Jehangir deserved to supervise the game between KPT and Afghan FC but the Chaman-born referee was scolded and man-handled by the fans after KESC defeated Afghan FC in the previous game at the same venue in which Jehangir acted as main referee.
“In order to avert relegation and score a few points Afghan FC have been deliberately doing such things,” sources said.
This was the last match of KPT in Balochistan and they were scheduled to return to Karachi early this morning (today).
At the PAF Complex Ground in Peshawar, PAF held four-time champions WAPDA to a draw in a sensational game which took the hosts to 39 points from 20 games.
WAPDA, who with the single point inflated their tally to 26 from 20 meetings, got onto the scoresheet through international midfielder Zulfiqar Shah in the 23rd minute. At half time, the visitors were leading 1-0.
Three minutes after the breather WAPDA doubled their lead through Wasim Abbas, putting a lot of pressure on PAF who in their previous game were held by PMC Athletico.
PAF, who have emerged as a strong side, became more aggressive and struck twice inside three minutes through Arif Nawaz and Mohammad Zeeshan, in the 68th and 70th minutes, respectively.
WAPDA tried to force the PAF to make blunders in their defence through a couple of forceful rallies but the hosts’ defenders did a fine job to avert the danger.
“We could have won it but today again we missed a few easy chances. But I am happy that we at least earned a crucial point,” PAF coach Mohammad Arshad said. “Now we will face ZTBL in our next game and then in Karachi and Quetta effort will be made to strengthen our position,” said Arshad, a former international.
