KARACHI: Pakistan have improved their world football position by two places, according to the world rankings released by FIFA on August 8.

Pakistan, who were placed at the 178th spot last month, now occupy the 176th spot.

The improvement in the ranking was witnessed following the team’s participation in the Palestine tournament where they drew both their matches.

Maldives, who will also feature in the Nehru Cup in India later this month, went up three places to 161. India slumped to 168 from their previous 163.

Afghanistan lost two places and now sit in 164th position; Sri Lanka improved three places to reach 179. Nepal fell to 162 from 155, while Bangladesh showed the greatest decline to 169 from their previous 151.

“The improvement in the ranking was witnessed following the team’s participation in the Palestine tournament where they drew both their matches.”

    Wrong!

Those matches were held back in May and had no relation to the rankings, and since Pakistan sent its U22 side, those matches were not considered official senior internationals by FIFA.

Ranked 176 is nothing to be happy about. It shows badly footballing standard in our country has declined. Being in top 150 or 120 would be some thing betterr. Playing lack of friendlies wo’nt help our teams cause and improve our rankings. PFF needs to do some thing like arranging more friendlies for our team. By playing 2-3 friendlies wo’nt help our ranking improve. Ideally our team should be playing 10-15 friendlies a year if ranking needs to move upward.
