Promising at left wing: Ahmed Akbar Khan

The promising Sydney-based winger Ahmed Akber Khan has been selected in the Pakistan National Team and we will probably see him playing some part in Wednesday’s game at Dhaka. Playing at left-mid during the camp, he impressed the Head coach Tariq lutfi. He met the Pakistani coach at Singapore airport where he got chance to talk with Head coach and later on got a call up to Pakistan team camp for the Palestine games. He played a good half of football in the Lahore game against the middle-east side.

 

So far, so good, he has gelled with the national team and has been training for more then a month now in Lahore and Islamabad where he got chance to play against local teams and departmental teams like, MTFA(9-0), IFT(6-0), Islamabad 11(5-0) KRL(2,0-2,0) and few other matches where he showed his class and skills, earning a call up to fly off with national team on 25th June to Dhaka.

 

We got a chance to talk with Ahmed and found him really happy at his inclusion. He was positive and hoped that this team has the potential to show its strength and get victory in the first round. He said that the team is united and struggling hard for victory. He praised Aslam Khan’s work with Jaffar Khan and said the keepers were in good shape. He also praised the strike partnership of Rasool and Arif.

 
He further said that he was very impressed by the quality and professionalism of Adnan Ahmed and Atif Bashir, their inclusions he said has made the team stronger, he was impressed by them said that they have got a huge experience in the international arena which will be really beneficial.

He said the weather is hot and humid in Bangladesh that may make it tough. But the boys are putting their all and getting the momentum to get their peak. He hopes to get a chance during both games to impress and help Pakistan towards the win.

  1. Left wing you say??! Bangladesh got arguably one of the best right wing back in Asia. Nasirul Islam is also the best player in the Bangladeshi squad. So, it would be interesting to see the battle between these two on the wing. Here is an article written on him by AFC during the Challenge Cup.

    Bangladesh is better known in world sporting circles for cricket rather than football. But to hear 21-year-old defender Nasir Ul-Islam wax lyrical after his country’s shock 2-1 victory over Tajikistan in the opening game at the AFC Challenge Cup, one may be forgiven for believing that the nation of 156 million people – the seventh largest in the world – are all football fanatics.

    “We won the SAF (South Asian Federation) Games recently and now we have beaten a team we have never won against before. This is a huge result for us, and inshaAllah we might go on and win this tournament (and qualify for the Asian Cup),” said Nasir.

    A dynamic wing-back, Nasir was at his effervescent best as he helped create the crucial first goal that gave his teammates heart, and the belief they could pull off a victory.

    “We always believed we could win. We went out expecting to win and all the guys were confident,” said Nasir, a regular in the national set-up for the past two years.

    “Cricket is very popular in my country but I always wanted to play football. And I’m very happy, especially now after helping my country get off to a great start at this tournament,” he added.

    The victory meant Bangladesh keep alive a win streak lasting six games – something even their cricket team cannot boast of.

    “It is six and counting,” said a happy Mohamed Showkat Ali Khan, vice-president of the Bangladesh Football Federation.

    “We were unbeaten at the SAF games, winning all our five matches and now this. We have never beaten Tajikistan before except at age group – under-19 – level. But this is just unbelievable and I’m so happy with the players,” Khan said.

    Bangladesh were unstoppable at the SAF Games held in Dhaka earlier in February, defeating Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, India and finally Afghanistan (4-0) in the final. But they were given little chance of beating Tajikistan, having lost all their previous encounters barring one 1-1 draw in Dhaka.

    “Yes, I was a little bit surprise myself that we won today,” admitted smiling Bangladesh coach Saiful Bari Titu. “We also surprised Tajikistan. They didn’t expect us to play attacking football and play in their own half.”

    Fielding a team who have been together for a long time – like Nasir, most of the players are under 23 years old – the Bangladeshis seemed to have a telepathic understanding that caught the Tajiks flatfooted.

    If Nasir was confident that the side could go all the way, coach Saiful was understandably a bit more cautious.

    “It is too early to talk about the final. We have to first qualify for the semi-finals before we can even think about winning this tournament,” Saiful said.

    “But we will do is continue to play attacking football,” promised Saiful.

    That will be sweet music to the ears of fullback Nasir who likes to freely roam down the wings.

    Pakistan football team coach Tariq Lutfi has expressed fears that rain might mar Pakistan’s 2014 World Cup qualifier match against Bangladesh, which also spoilt the practice sessions in Dhaka.

    Lutfi said Pakistan needed to draw first blood in the first-leg encounter against the hosts because a defeat will affect the national team’s morale for the second-leg match that will take place in Lahore on July 3.

    Lutfi rued the fact that the team was unable to practice.

    “Rain has been a problem, it’s ruined the pitch for the match,” Lutfi told The Express Tribune. “We originally planned to have two practice sessions but we never got a chance to do anything because of the rain. I’m concerned because we needed to get familiar with the field prior to the match.”

    Lutfi also pointed out that winning the first encounter will give confidence to the team as the squad has failed to win an international match this year. He said that tasting back-to-back defeats has lowered the team’s morale.

    However, Lutfi remained hopeful of a good performance from captain and goal-keeper Jaffer Khan, who is the most senior player in the squad. UK-based defender Zesh Rehman will also be playing the match.

    “We badly wanted practice sessions because Rehman had joined the team yesterday and I wanted the foreign and local players to practice together and discuss strategies, but now I’m counting on the players’ experience,” he said.

  7. it is the first time that Pakistan football match is being soo much promoted on face book and on the PFF official website.. good to see this.. wish the cricket loving channel of Pakistan Geo super also had come up with a little bit of effort to promote this match…. shame Geo Super.. its not the sports channel,, its a cricket channel…

    1. Agreed! The fact that social media is promoting this is because thats what they want to see. Televised media needs to wake up to this fact. We wont watch the crap u feed us forever.

      If not Geo then the others should have grabbed the opportunity. Sure PTV is showing the home game but who watches that channel n there not even promoting it.
